Earth's future climate at 9 km worldwide resolution

A team of scientists from the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), Pusan National University in South Korea and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven, Germany has achieved an important breakthrough in climate modeling, providing unprecedented insights into Earth's future climate and its variability. Their research was published in the open access journal Earth System Dynamics.

Barcelona could suffer heat waves up to 6ºC more intense by the end of the century

Heat waves that already affect the population of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) could significantly intensify in the future, with temperature increases of up to 6ºC and a general reduction in relative humidity in cities by the end of the century. This is shown in a study carried out by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), which warns of an increase in average maximum temperatures of 4ºC and average minimum temperatures of 3.5ºC if greenhouse gas emissions are not drastically reduced. Temperatures could reach values above 45ºC in urban inland areas of the AMB and above 42ºC in interior areas of the city of Barcelona.

FAST telescope unveils supersonic filamentary network in very-high-velocity cloud

Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), researchers from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with other institutes, has uncovered an unexpectedly complex and dynamic filamentary network within a very-high-velocity cloud (VHVC) in the Milky Way.

New study shows Hurricane Hunter flights significantly increase forecast accuracy

When a hurricane is in the forecast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) deploys its famed Hurricane Hunter team to gather data directly from the storm. The team uses specialized aircraft to fly into the hurricane and collect information about its intensity, structure, and movement, which is used to improve forecasts and warnings.

These missions significantly increase the accuracy of hurricane forecasts, according to a new study published by researchers at the University at Albany.

The researchers focused on Hurricane Hunter missions conducted with NOAA’s Gulfstream IV during recent Atlantic hurricane seasons.

Decline in aerosols could lead to more heatwaves in populated areas

Nitrogen may limit natural climate solutions

Forests, grasslands, and other natural areas around the world have access to about a quarter less nitrogen than previously estimated, according to a new study published today in Nature. Coauthored by Sarah Batterman, an ecologist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, findings have implications for natural climate solutions, as nitrogen is essential to plant growth and thus the removal of carbon from the atmosphere.

Drexel engineers want to make buildings more energy efficient by making walls, floors and ceilings more like elephant ears

Drawing inspiration from the veinous ears of jackrabbits and elephants, Drexel University researchers have come up with a new approach to passive heating and cooling that could one day make buildings more energy efficient. Their concept, recently published in the Journal of Building Engineering, embeds a vascular network within cement-based building materials that, when filled with paraffin-based material, can help passively regulate the surface temperature of walls, floors and ceilings.
